Ssireum (Korean Wrestling) - Introduction
Ssireum is Korea's traditional wrestling, jointly registered by North and South Korea as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018. Two wrestlers on a sand ring grab each other's satba (cloth belt) and win by toppling the opponent first. Ancient history is proven by Goguryeo tomb murals from the Three Kingdoms period. Traditionally, village wrestling competitions were held on Dano and Chuseok, with bulls awarded to winners. Various techniques exist including baejigi (belly throw), deulbaejigi (lifting throw), and ogeum geoli (leg hook). Modern professional competitions crown the "Cheonhajangsa" (strongest under heaven). Ssireum competes purely with strength and technique, with sportsmanship respecting opponents valued. Recently popular among foreigners as Korean cultural experience.
