Seokjeon (Stone Fight) - Introduction
Seokjeon (Stone Fight) was a traditional game where two villages or groups fought by throwing stones - very intense and dangerous. Records exist from Three Kingdoms period, estimated to have started as military training before developing into folk play. Mainly held on Dano or Jeongwol Daeboreum as inter-village competitions; winning villages believed they would have abundant harvest that year. Strict rules required throwing stones only above the forehead and not attacking fleeing opponents. However, frequent injuries led to multiple bans during Joseon Dynasty. Seokjeon served to strengthen village community bonds and test young men's courage and strength. Gradually disappeared after strengthened bans under Kings Yeongjo and Jeongjo. Not recreated today due to danger but remains important historical game showing Korean traditional culture's vigor and community spirit.
